Job Title: Assistant Editor- Kiswahili

Reports to: Assistant Publishing Manager- Moran Publishers
Nature of Engagement: Contract
Location: Moran (E.A) Publishers Ltd., Nairobi
Role Overview
We are looking for a meticulous and linguistically gifted Kiswahili Assistant-Editor to join our editorial team. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all Kiswahili publications meet the highest standards of grammar, clarity and factual accuracy. You will play a key role in shaping content that is culturally resonant and educationally sound.
Key Responsibilities
- Editing: Edit Kiswahili manuscripts at different levels for completeness, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and syntax without losing the author’s original voice.
- Fact-checking: Verify content to ensure absolute accuracy.
- Tone & Consistency: Ensure resonance with target reader and subject, adherence to house style guides and consistency across multi-volume series.
- Proofreading: Conduct final layout reviews to ensure seamless text flow and correctness of book proofs.
- Translation: Translate or localize content from English to Kiswahili where necessary, ensuring natural flow and context.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other editorial teams and designers to ensure cross-functional quality.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor of Education Arts (BEd.) in Kiswahili, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Kiswahili, Linguistics,
- Language Mastery: Exceptional command of Kiswahili, with a deep understanding of linguistic nuances, rules and grammar (Sarufi).
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office; familiarity with Adobe InCopy or InDesign is an added advantage.
- Added Advantages:
- Experience as a Kiswahili Teacher teaching the CBC curriculum.
- Previous experience in an editing or proofreading role in a publishing house.
- A higher academic and professional qualification will be an added advantage.
